Prof Dr Loren Stuckenbruck, “How Much Does the Christ Event Solve?”—Chris Keith

Here is the video of the keynote lecture from our 2014 Evil in Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity, delivered by Prof Dr Loren Stuckenbruck and entitled "How Much Does the Christ Event Solve?"  If you're interested in the relationship between Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity, you do not want to miss this.  Loren weighs in pretty heavily on recent Pauline scholarship.  The question and answer session at the end is also illuminating.

  1. Guys, how about a synopsis for those of us who don't have 71 minutes? :-)

    1. Pete, sorry for the delay. As a very, very short synopsis, Loren argues (convincingly) that something like an inaugurated eschatology, where a partial victory in the present indicates a secured victory at the end, was not unique to Christianity but present in a number of Second Temple Jewish traditions/texts. Thus, the attempts of many NT scholars to portray the already/not yet aspect of Paul's eschatology in particular as an unprecedented innovation is ignoring a wealth of material. In terms of the title, he also notes that in Jewish tradition the present reality of God's work is not typically conceptualized in a way that deals a final blow to evil forces.

  2. The brilliant Loren Stuckenbruck ... great memories from Durham! Mmmmmn ... Martin, de Boer, Campbell, Kasemann, Dunn etc .... lots to think about. In light of Loren's particular focus, it would be nice to hear him discuss christology ....

    1. His Christology will also surprise. And of course challenge the all too certain assurances of church dogma.
