Very much appreciated this interview and agree that love and humor are the essence of a Jewish-Christian bond, as of many bonds.
A few reflections: (1) As a young pastor, a friend and fellow seminary graduate shared with me that he had sought psychotherapy with a number of therapists and was not helped until he felt the love flowing from a particular therapist that happened to be Jewish. (2)Later in mid-life with a psychology degree and looking for work it was a Jewish psychologist who offered me a job, and we subsequently worked together for 25 years. I watched as he raised his children under the influence of conservative Judaism. Two things stand out in my mind about that initial interview: he "tested" me to make sure I could use profanity without guilt, and he noticed I had some kind of "problem" with money. I didn't admit it but he was right as Jesus words about the kingdom and the rich, and what it actually meant today, were constantly flowing through my mind. (3)As a member of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association I couldn't help noticing that it seemed like the majority of the leadership and the practitioners which I admired most were Jewish. They didn't need Christian commitments to be loving dedicated successful healers.
I personally wish we could find a different way to talk about Jew and Christian. We need to speak to one another as if we are all Jews, which we are.
And all human beings.
