Friend of the Jesus Blog Larry Behrendt has finished his series of reviews of
Jesus against the Scribal Elite. He has posted his agreements and disagreements on his blog, Jewish-Christian Intersections, in parts
one,
two,
three, and
four. I've been able to give some brief responses as well. I'd like to thank Larry for his careful and considered reading of the book. Larry is by far the most insightful "lay" reader whom I have encountered (to the extent that I have trouble using this term for him, though he insists on it) and I'm honored that he took the time to work through the book on his blog, which is a hub for Jewish-Christian dialogue.
Chris, thank YOU for your thoughtful responses (brief? Hardly! But who am I to talk?). It is an amazing transformative experience, to engage a smart and talented historian in his work, and again online.
ReplyDeleteLarry, you are most welcome and thanks again for your careful reading of the work.
DeleteIn my reading, Jesus' attacks on the scribes is one of the many self-deconstructive elements of the Bible.
ReplyDeleteHere we have a text, after all. Warning about the writers of texts.

It's a useful moment of honesty by the authors of the Bible, to be sure.
